Amy Lewis was born in the North East of England, and trained in Theatre at Dartington College of Arts in Devon.

She has directed and made several performances in London, Manchester and Newcastle.

Amy makes work with a focus on reenacting and retelling true stories & experiences of women & girls, through extensive research.

Designers (sound, video, set, lighting) play an equal part in the initial devising phase and the work often uses interactive technologies with an emphasis on the moving body.

The aim of the work is to:

  • explore and display social injustices

  • deconstruct the past and how it affects the present

  • move against hierarchic, elitist theatre for white, academically trained upper classes and instead towards a diverse and inclusive theatre.

Amy’s work has previously been supported by Northern Stage in Newcastle, and has been shown  at the New Diorama, The Space, Peckham Levels, The Pleasance, Plymouth Barbican and TheaterForum Kreuzberg, Berlin.

Amy is Artistic Director of Awkward City, Assistant Director for Open Clasp Theatre Company, visiting artist at University of the Arts London and is a mentee of theatre director Katie Mitchell.

Amy splits her time between Amsterdam, London & Newcastle.
